Wanderlust

(Kate Jayne)
April 21, 2009
whiskey dreams of good old days confuse my tired mind
shaking loose the evening stardust that’s been covering my eyes
throwing unforgiving daylight on what we’ve tried to leave behind
that I cannot outrun my troubles still comes as a surprise

when the long-legged lanterns light
and the bergamot city sleeps
the rose red lips open again to me
say, “lady come back to me”

the river rushes westward under bridges where I came
to drop the double-sided daggers that our likenesses became
I see them in the shallows and my heart begins to ache
they glint bright with my regret, weighed down heavy by my shame

when the long-legged lanterns light
and the bergamot city sleeps
the rose red lips open again to me
say, “lady come back to me”

whiskey dreams of good old days make me a nuisance to myself
calling wanderlust the drive to fill your space with someone else
I travel half a world away from the altar where I knelt
but I’ve crossed no ocean yet that’s been vast enough to help

when the long-legged lanterns light
and the bergamot city sleeps
the rose red lips open again to me
say, “lady come back to me”
