the winter of our discontent came early, it was may
when first cupid’s arrow came my way
there in wedding gown season I couldn’t even see them
so blinded by your beacon
it’s always a bit disappointing to find
the things you think will kill you leave you alive
summer I fled eastward to lick my wounds in the sun
and to put some miles of distance between us
turning my back against the water like king solomon’s daughter
with just as much luck changing course
fate did me a favor by moving me along
and I took my sweet time retracting my claws
it's hard to explain to better men I turn away
but lord knows I wasn’t born to fall
soon winter gave to spring, bare shoulders showing not just skin
but the long term effects of being gun shy
my reflexes well worn like a silly crown of thorns
every glance sending my head into the sand
I did all I could to cut up my heart
but it’s smarter than me, it always was
and, being the wise one, stitched itself up
and flew right back to the one it loves
the months blur into one another as we circle each other
and the years keep on getting on
but darling, you ain’t getting younger and I’m living in my prime
it’s hard to know when the river will run dry
so I develop a taste for tea as I hope you will for me
and one day you will loosen my ropes
you will bend to place a kiss on each long-bruised wrist
like a gentleman you will give me your coat
