Kate Jayne: Music

Charleston

(Kate Jayne)
charleston can be cold this time of year
the trees heavy with magnolia
in the rain this morning I could smell the melancholy of spring
nursing my third cup of coffee
on your queen street balcony
with your blanket around my shoulders leaving you bare in the bed

I look o’er the rooftops to the church steeple
where you say we will be married

I’ve been thinking maybe misunderstood
could be a valid way to travel
but lately I don’t feel so bad for myself anymore
painting the town as rhett and scarlett
you and me three sheets to the wind
I’ve found looking your devil in the eye is easier with someone holding your hand

what a lucky girl I am to have borrowed
carolina’s rose glasses for a while
but I know the reason she has lately been gathering
her rubies is to send me off in style

three days shy of a month now
the road’s been tugging at my ankles
I feel today I may be up to leaving for good
and before I say goodbye
I’d like to say I’ve never felt worse
but to me a man like you is a fair trade for feeling this way

if you promise not to forget me
I will promise that I will never fade
my love, you knew the lake was empty
but still you jumped like you were not afraid
like you were not afraid
